So glad I held on to AMC. It could go either way, but the fact that NYC is about to reopen theaters means that the rest of the country will soon follow and that gives me hope.

96

u/CopperD1 Feb 23 '21

the problem with AMC is that it wasn't doing well before the pandemic either. It was trading at less than what it is now during 2019 which scares me. I'd insta buy below $5 though

101

u/MostlyBullshitStory Feb 23 '21 edited Feb 23 '21

Most places that reopen like ski resorts are doing much better than just 2 years ago because people missed the option of going. Let's hope the same thing happens to theaters!

The biggest issue here is whether some studios stick to direct to streaming. That could be detrimental to AMC. The trend also seems to the lounge, reserved seating with food and drinks, which could really reinvent the theater business model, but the upgrades aren't cheap.

What is this /r/personalfinance?

91

u/Astralahara Feb 23 '21

Seriously.

1: The idea of someone in /r/wallstreetbets having 3 months' cash is absurd.

2: I'm pretty conservative and risk averse and even I think 6 months' cash is stupid. If you talk to the morons in PF they'll say shit like "Well what if you lose your job, AND get injured, AND your parents die, AND they don't have anything to leave you, AND all your friends abandon you, AND you can't get government benefits..."

Motherfucker, WHAT IF A METEOR HITS YOU! You mean you don't have billions of dollars to reconstruct your consciousness in an AI apotheosis?! WOW you negligent fool!

6 months in cash is stone cold stupid. You're losing money to inflation on half a years' salary.

51

u/WeirdSubstance Feb 23 '21

Not disagreeing with your points, but it's 6 months of expenses. Not 6 months of salary. However, for someone living paycheck to paycheck, it's the same thing.

→ More replies

9

u/LimeGreenDuckReturns Feb 23 '21

I keep cash for 5 months critical expenses, I hold it in instant-access savings making 1% apr.

In 2016 I left one job for another, hated the new job and lost it, split up with my fiancé then tried to kill myself. I had zero issues getting a new job, however I was in no shape to function. The only thing that kept me going was my emergency fund.

I chose to take 4 months off work, I took a couple of holidays, I chilled out and did my own thing, safe in the knowledge I had secure money to cover it. Once I started to run low I walked into a job better, and more well paid than both the previous.

I did all that without having to sell off any long-term investments to cover it.

First thing I did was rebuild that fund, the money lost to inflation is a tiny price to pay for that level of peace-of-mind.

WSJ says rising bond yields are impacting certain valuations, namely tech. The concern seems to be more around how fast yields are rising vs how high they are so hopefully this is just a minor correction

u/adayofjoy Feb 23 '21 edited Feb 23 '21

It was a very fast correction though.

u/icydash Feb 23 '21

Can you explain what this means to me like I'm five? I know nothing about bonds or bond yields.

223

u/Questionable_Answer5 Feb 23 '21

An explanation from one idiot to another. When you invest, the most common choice is between stocks and bonds. Bonds’ return is called a yield, which is the amount in addition what you put into the bond you would expect to get back. Bond yields are typically lower than stock returns, but are still valuable to people like boomers because they are less risky. When bond yields go up, stocks become less relatively attractive and vice versa.

This same dynamic impacts what people are willing to pay for a stock. Stock valuations consider the future money that an investment will bring in. But, money today is worth more than future future money. Higher bond yields means waiting for the future money is less attractive so those earnings are discounted more (read less valuable). This is what time value of money essentially is.

TL;DR: higher bond yields means more money today, so waiting for potential big money tomorrow makes less sense, so people want stocks less

31

u/icydash Feb 23 '21

Ah thanks for the explanation, makes much more sense now

There have constantly been fears of a coming crash due to inflation and over-valuation of companies (extrinsic value is a thing, but over the pandemic its become more and more what people are pushing rather than intrinsic value).

When those fears escalate and people realize their extreme valuations of companies, the stock market will correct (or burst, but I doubt this is the bubble bursting). It is important to note that almost everything is doing worse than what even the most negative statistical models claimed, especially the tech industry.

Hence, last week I started rolling credit spreads on SPY. The panic is insane. Today I opened 3 call credit spread, premium width of $24 on a $1 spread expiring tomorrow with a 90% chance (based on basic models) of profit. There is almost no way there will be a recovery of that size by tomorrow. Only reason I'm not doing naked calls is because RH doesn't let me, and other brokers don't let me do spreads yet.

72

u/movadolover Feb 23 '21

Very natural to have red days, tesla is having a tough few days and it’s the foundation of the bull market we’ve been having. Less bullish stocks aren’t doing too bad but they’re going down a little too. We could see a recovery we could see a correction

51

u/DimesOnHisEyes Feb 23 '21 edited Feb 23 '21

Tesla has dropped about $250 in a month so yea I'd say it's been rough.

34

u/SmitePlug Feb 23 '21

that’s not crazy though if you account for it’s growth in a year. It dips sometimes this ones a little rougher but GME has definitely stirred the market and made red a bad taste instead of a part of the pallet. Today was bad at open but it’s about as bad as yesterday now and slowly recovering back i think we’ll be okay someone needs to teach the rookies that red is natural. if not they’re going to sink us all

I started with shares but I wasn’t really making anything and then I found options. Made good money on my first cpl and it got me hooked. Sold my shares and Went all in on options. Big mistake so far lol. But I have learned some very good stuff

Look. If you take money from a losing position and put it into a position that goes on to win that is the same as leaving it where it is and having it start win, right?

You are literally contemplating ditching the winners to subsidize the losers. I would not do that.

Also "Just don't sell" only works for stocks. Not options. If you're new you should start buying stocks to bet on a company going up, NOT buying calls.

"What if I want to bet a company will go down?"

Don't. Not yet. Find one you want to bet will go up and buy the stock.
