TIL In high school, Donald Glover was voted "Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons." In 2006, Glover sent writing samples to David Miner, which included a spec script he had written for The Simpsons. Miner and Tina Fey were impressed by Glover's work and hired him to become a writer for 30 Rock.

Just an FYI - The spec script for The Simpsons was an episode which Homer is arrested for stealing a single song off the Internet and taken to court by the RIAA, where he must face his victims, Hall & Oates.

Man i kinda want them to produce it now lmao that sounds like an explorable shitshow the simpsons havent touched on

Man, I forgot about that episode. Fuck modern Marge Simpson (also Homer, but less so in this case. It's sad what's happened to The Simpsons.)

63

u/GoBanana42 6d ago

Hah, I am honestly confused as to whether or not you consider that episode to have the “modern Marge” you’re complaining about. People have such varying definitions of classic/good Simpsons, especially on Reddit when the average user tends to be younger.

152

u/2punornot2pun 6d ago

There was a great YouTube video about the Simpsons.

After a while, Homer becomes just an idiot. That's it. An idiot who does idiot things and doesn't care about anything else.

Before, he was an idiot, but was doing his best for his family. He did things out of love. Not because "O BURGER NOM / lol he did funny dumbs". There was conflict and it was resolved.

I remember having tension in the Simpsons between family members, friends, etc., and getting resolutions. But now it's just.

one. giant. long. fart.

He, along with pretty much every character on the show, has been Flanderized. This is the result of having the same characters being the same age and having the show span decades. They already made fun of this fact by mocking introducing new characters to spice up the show (like poochie on itchy and scratchy).

How much longer til the next set of Atlanta episodes? Talk about a great show missing the zeitgeist.

306

u/oro12345 6d ago

Theyre filming season 3 and 4 in march, was supposed to do it last year but covid messed it up.

Glover also just signed a deal with amazon which includes a mr and mrs smith series and beyond. It wont stop him from making season 5 or more of atlanta, but dudes gonna be busy so who knows if season 5 will happen

He has a speaking part in an early episode as a crew member.

all of Kenny’s jokes about growing up in Stone Mountain, Georgia is the other writers making fun of Don Glovers home town.

And when Kenny goes back to his high school reunion and it’s all black people, that’s because the city around that mountain is 99% black.

155

u/ArchDucky 6d ago

On Conan's podcast he talked a few times about how he doesn't have real relationships with some people. He just immediately goes into bits the second he sees them. Jack McBrayer is one of those people.

He was credited with almost all of the backstory of Kenneth's character. Kenneth even came from the same town that Glover did in real life, Stone Mountain, GA.

115

u/advocate2020 6d ago

wait though. like how much of the back story? like the fact that kenneth is an immortal being who can speak to rats and sees the world as muppets, incarnating periodically through new bodies where he coordinates with jacob as an interloper for god to positively influence the life of tracy jordan and humanity at large? if thats all donald glover im gonna piss myself. searching for kenneth drops and piecing together who kenneth actually is is my absolute favorite part of 30 rock.

36

u/falcon5768 6d ago

According to Tina Fey in Bossypants I think, a large portion of who he is as a character is Donalds contributions to the show.

14

u/Mujokan 6d ago

I had read that book but I only became aware of Glover with Atlanta

"Our youngest writer was Donald Glover. He had just graduated from NYU’s writing program and was still living in a dorm and working as an RA. Donald was our only African American writer at the time, but his real diversity was that he was our only “cool young person” who could tell us what the “kids were listening to these days.” Also, because he came from a large family in Georgia, he was very helpful in writing for the character Kenneth the Page. MVP joke: a scene where Jenna (Jane Krakowski) is trying to teach Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) how to brag about himself in a passive-aggressive way."

[goes on to write out the joke]

Yeah he was on track to become a really big deal writer after putting in a few years, but decided to quit and go over to Community as a performer instead.

Basically everyone who works with him says he's stupendously talented, but always thinking ahead to what comes next.

270

u/ArchDucky 6d ago

Someone from the cast (I think Joel) said the first day on set of Community Chevy saw how talented Donald was and started targeting him out of jealousy.

276

u/Kendertas 6d ago

Chevy was such a perfect cast for Pierce. Unfortunately its because he is the IRL version of Pierce and possibly more insecure.

320

u/ArchDucky 6d ago

Dan Harmon sat outside Chevy's trailer during Season 2 and wrote down the stuff he heard him yell at his assistants. Put them in the show verbatim.

128

u/bluejegus 6d ago

Lmao thats also a a bit in the show where Donald makes a crazy popular Twitter account of shit Pierce says. @crazywhitemansays

31

u/hazycrazydaze 6d ago

And Pierce knew about it and had no idea it was him lol

16

u/imjustbettr 6d ago

Most likely based on the twitter account @shitmydadsays which went on to become a book as well as a short lived sitcom starring William Shatner.

33

u/kinght6 6d ago

Really? That's kind of hilarious

85

u/ArchDucky 6d ago

The cast also tweeted things Chevy said with this hashtag. Some of it is pretty harsh.

It gets better

Pudi: I will say the erections line — that is another moment for me that I will never forget, because we were outside reading the script with Chevy and he was reading that line for the first time. I was watching him read that line for the first time, and he was saying “erections” or “erection.” And I think he mentioned it should be “erection,” or he wasn’t sure why it was “erections.” And we were all trying to convince him no, that it should be “erections,” plural. And that was when I was like, We made it. This show is the greatest show of all time.

Harmon: Like all of the dialogue wasn’t lifted from the meetings where he’d summon us to his trailer. He just never would remember saying this stuff. “66, dick.” I swear to God, so many lines of dialogue were just written in the margins of the script during these meetings in his trailer. “I speak seven languages.” “I play the piano.” And then we’d write them in the script and he’d be like, “Now we’re talking. Who’s this writer?”

31

u/DrEnter 6d ago

The show practically writes itself.

Chevy gets a bad rap –completely deserved– but he’s a member of an entirely different generation. Bill Murray called him “middle talent” during a fight, and it’s such an astute estimation of him; even though he went off to be a much bigger star than his SNL pals, he was never as talented, as edgy or as legendary as some of them. You can tell Donald Glover would never do a “Vacation” in a million years, and Chevy can tell that, too. That’s why he feels that jealousy. He can shit gold nuggets, he figuratively did that to many comedy franchises, but he doesn’t have that.

69

u/_Rand_ 6d ago

Chevy is a good comedic actor. He’s not a good comedian.

15

u/Message_10 6d ago

Yeah, that’s accurate. Don’t give him the lines, and he’s not funny / creative anymore.

24

u/vibraltu 6d ago edited 6d ago

He should've stuck to drumming;

Actually, back in student times Chevy Chase jammed with Don Fagen (pre-Steely Dan era) who said he was a pretty good drummer (high praise from a very fussy musician).

I never thought he was that funny in SNL era. I didn't really get why he went on to become successful/famous.

edit: when Chase started out, his big schtick was a literal "pratfall": he would pretend to trip and bounce on his ass (a parody of President Gerald Ford). I theorize that he actually really ruined his back muscles doing this, and he turned into a more bitter person as a result.

8

u/nalydpsycho 6d ago

It's also because he wasn't even a main cast member originally, he was not one of the second city allum either. So he was an outsider, who was just there as a writer. Then when they were looking for Weekend Update they decided to go with him, and then he was the best Gerald Ford impression. So he did two things, and they ended up being the breakout hits and signature elements of SNL. (Not Gerald Ford, but, parodying/lampooning sitting presidents.) So he went from just a guy who had no established friendships with the cast, to the most famous member in the cast when the first episode aired. Nothing to ground him, he got too big for his britches, and can you blame him? He went from backroom to one of the biggest names in comedy for a decade literally overnight.

It’s not Community or Derek Comedy, but Atlanta is an excellent showcase of Glover’s comedy matured! Or if not matured, just presented in a different way!

Totally recommend Atlanta. It's not goofy "I pooped my pants/Don't eat the crab dip" Glover, but it's got plenty of laughs - and some pretty sobering scenes too.

There's an episode that takes place entirely on a fake TV talk show (complete with parody commercials) that feels straight from Dan Harmon.

It’s “you can’t disappoint a picture”

And if that’s all I’ll see myself out

The scene with the invisible car has the best setup and payoff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vT9bW_l8TZs

Atlanta has some heavy twin peaks vibes and jokes often hits with an intense juxtaposition with what's actually going on in the scene. Its amazing.

The Darius/Teddy Perkins episode is creepy as hell but some of the best “suspenseful comedy” (?) I’ve ever experienced

24

u/redsyrinx2112 6d ago

Darius is my favorite character. His conversation about the Flaming Hot Cheetos was so simple, but it absolutely killed me.

13

u/yajtraus 6d ago

Darius is absolutely hilarious and his actor, LaKeith Stanfield, is brilliant in pretty much everything he’s in.

Thats probably my favorite episode. Glover killed it as Perkins. It one of most intense things I've seen from tv.

30

u/workEEng 6d ago

Wait Glover was Perkins? The fuck? Mind Blown!

Also yeah it was really good and honestly scary and only a 30 minute episode. Great TV.

14

u/Jabrono 6d ago

You're in for a treat, my dumbass didn't realize it was Glover either and it's even better a second time once you're aware.

Even his small role as Aaron Davis in Spider-Man was a nice taste of the kind of measured comedy he exudes in Atlanta. Not the same high energy of Troy.

26

u/Durpulous 6d ago

I honestly think Atlanta is a masterpiece and I'm surprised it's not better known.

28

u/DarthDonutwizard 6d ago

Atlanta is extremely well known and won Emmys and Golden Globes??

100% agree. It’s such a well written balance of satire, commentary, character development, etc. I also recommend Ramy for a similar style of show!

I mean, he's expressed his want to return to Community with everyone else. Atlanta is a dramedy, and shows how much he has evolved.

Idk if you watched the Community table read from last year or the Q&A they did after, but there's still a little more of his old goofy self left then you might think.

Another funny piece of information, Donald glover got childish Gambino by typing his name into a wu tang clan name generator

Just re-watched a few episodes of Community. Troy is joking with Abed, and says he's related to Danny Glover.... which the actor Donald Glover is not, but people assume he is.

Clever bit of writing there, but, well, Community is full of it.

All my high school had was boring superlatives like "Nicest Smile" and "Whitest Sneakers."

15

u/Smartnership 6d ago

I was voted, "Most Likely to Need a Dictionary to Look Up 'Superlative'"

Turns out it isn't a really strong laxative.

57

u/DocDerry 6d ago

Donald Glover looks very similar to Childish Gambino. They could almost be brothers.

I just started showing a friend Community. She had no idea Donald was also CG, so, during our last watch, I flashed her a picture of him from the “This is America” video on my phone. Her head nearly exploded.

38

u/choppedfiggs 6d ago

What a weird category to vote for. Most schools have most likely to succeed or most likely to become famous or some shit. Pretty specific of a category. Unless they had like 400 unique categories so everyone got something.

71

u/kevindamm 6d ago

I think in some schools the superlative awards are all/mostly tailored to whoever they want to award, so it started with "what do we give DonGlover?" not "who do you think could write for The Simpsons this year?"

He went to a pretty small performing arts magnet high school in Atlanta, which is probably why. (I only have that committed to memory b/c I found out shockingly recently he actually went to high school with me before transferring to that performing arts magnet--I saw a picture of him with people I knew and was like WTF and then realized he must have left my school after freshman year which is why we didn't graduate together.)

That's because he is an older version of Miles Morales and younger Lando all wrapped up in 1 super badass package.

All bullshit aside Donald Glover is super talented and works his ass off. Deserves all the credit
