Related note: I just learned there are people who dislike Elf.

762

u/visionsofblue 6d ago

They must be south pole elves.

151

u/Freelancer47 6d ago

South pole elves are rough.

That's where all the blackjacks, brass knuckles, & knives-of-questionable-materials are made for all the bad kids who don't qualify for coal, but need a "one up" on other bad kids!

I don't dislike elf so much as I'm really tired of will Ferrell. Same reason I hate Adam Sandler I think, but I don't dislike Ferrell to that extent. The man child act gets old really fast and for both of those actors their roles are generally the same in every movie.

103

u/mikaelfivel 6d ago

Check out uncut gems. Sandler is way out of his usual role but he was perfect

91

u/PmMeYourDiscordChat 6d ago

Similarly for Will Ferrell, check out Stranger Than Fiction.

u/Krinks1 6d ago

This happens a lot. People get careless and go ice fishing or snow mobiling without checking conditions. Then suddenly the Coast Guard is needed because they're trapped on the ice.

35

u/btveron 6d ago

"Today is going to be overcast with a high of 22 °F, small chance of snow flurries in the early evening with temperatures dropping to near 0 overnight. There is also a 50% chance of ice sheets separating from the lake shore and drifting out to oblivion. So be careful out there."

In all seriousness I know nothing about ice fishing so what would you look for that could warn you that there's a chance you'll get stranded on an ice sheet?

11

u/sour_cereal 6d ago

You can see in the background smaller, yet still large, chunks already flowing in the background. It also looks quite sunny and warm. So you've got flow pulling on it as it melts. Probably not good to go on.

5

u/pangalaticgargler 6d ago

If you live in an area with a lot of ice fishing there is usually at least one source for ice conditions and whether it is safe to be out there.

What is the actual duration of that breakaway?

I'm just trying to gauge if I were high up in a downtown build, could I watch that happen while I drank my cup of coffee. Or would it be so long and subtle that I'd see it together in the morning and at the end of the workday wonder when it floated away.

447

Look how long those skyscraper shadows get near the end. Seems like this was an all-day event. I guess it depends on how huge your coffee mug is.

You can see by the building shadows moving it took hours

13

u/Zyphin 6d ago

Well based on the shadows we saw here it appears it began a little before high noon and end close to sun set. Right now out here i would guess it was about 10-11am to about 4 pm

9

u/Yeti_MD 6d ago

You can use the building shadows like a sundial! It looks like the shadows rotate a little more than 90° from beginning to end, so the total time would be a bit over 6 hours.

At some point it's going to run into the shore on the other side and end up in a pig pile in Muskegon or something

87

u/whatthefir2 6d ago

That’s what usually happens. The Michigan side gets these cool ice piles on the beaches in the late winter

53

u/velesi 6d ago

I got to see the ice come ashore on Lake Superior, it was loud and scary and so awesome to see that much force being continually, slowly coming towards your rental cabin and stopping just a few yards away 😳

13

u/gwaydms 6d ago

Good thing it stopped. Ice shoves can go through buildings and take down trees.

19

u/a_trane13 6d ago

In the worst polar vortex year in my hometown in SW MI they were a couple stories high and extended out like 50 feet. So tempting to climb and also so dangerous. I had a few facebook friends post photos on them.

It also makes this slight cracking or creaking sound all the time.

→ More replies

18

u/hitlama 6d ago

This particular piece probably won't make it that far, I'm guessing. Despite outward appearances, the ice is only a couple inches thick at most, and the lake's center surface temperature is close to 45 degrees. At a SW heading from Chicago it's at least 50-60 miles across to Michigan. That ice gonna melt.

Could anyone familiar with the geography help me figure out which parts of the city we're seeing here?

That looks like Navy Pier way in the background, and maybe Soldier Field in the middle of the frame, where the highway curves out? But that can't be right, because I don't think there are any buildings as tall as our camera that far south.

Your help is very much appreciated by this Michigander with a giant crush on Chicago.

49

u/krp31489 6d ago

This is from the John Hancock looking north up Lakeshore Drive. Neither Navy Pier or Soldier Field are in this image, they're both south of the location this is being taken from. The apartment buildings just to the left are a part of the Gold Coast neighborhood.

20

u/nitr0smash 6d ago

Got it, thanks! So that means we're seeing the edge of Lincoln Park there on the left, past where the line of foreground buildings end?
