Tic-snac-toe

331

u/king_tommy 7d ago

He went corner first , have to go middle!!! All dogs know this

243

u/gotTheBeefSonDad 7d ago

That's why this dog is a true professional, he knows the corner is the optimal opening move.

174

u/Malgas 7d ago

63

u/Zaronax 7d ago

Yep... Corner allows you to set-up a double tic-tac-toe, while middle quickly ends up getting cornered.

20

u/fezzuk 7d ago

The only way to win is not to play.... but then you don't get snacks

7

u/flyingboarofbeifong 7d ago

This makes me realize that Whopper is a great name for a doggo.

8

u/silentkoala3 7d ago

So to be clear: Cornering the corner let’s you corner two or more corners whereas not cornering a corner makes it so cornering you is easier than if you cornered the corner to begin with even though you can still corner a corner after not cornering the corner right away.

Tic-Tac-Toe is a solved game and corner-first is the only strategy that will always result in either a win or a tie for the first player if played optimally.

18

u/dragonfiremalus 7d ago

Not entirely true. Let's look at the three distinct first moves. Center, corner, and side. If X goes center, then O can choose corner or side. Corner leads to a tie game, side leads to a win for X. If X goes corner, then O can go corner, side, or center. Anything but center leads to a win for X, center leads to a tie. If X goes side, well several things can happen but there's no good way for X to win.

So both center and corner as the first move lead to win-or-tie situations for the first player. The argument for playing corner comes down to there being more ways for the first player to win, and it being a less familiar game. The counter argument is that the correct move for the second player, go center, is more intuitive in this situation.

The moral of the story is for both players, going side is a terrible choice. And unless you're first player, you really don't have any reasonable way to win.

Not fully true. I feel like I've won more times going corners first. It throws off opponents.

See I was thinking those two snacks the pup didn’t eat were somehow made unappealing. Like dipped in vinegar or something.

Your theory sounds just as likely.

333

I agree with your theory, he's either trained to eat one kind and not the other, or he prefers one kind over the other.

Every day of his life

36

u/TheOneFreeMan002 7d ago

Day 476:

I've ended up selling my car to afford more dog treats. I may have to take out a second mortgage on the house as well.. I'm determined to do this tic-tac-toe game every day until the dog wins one. It will be so worth it. That's what I keep telling myself, at least. My wife left me last month. She was telling me I'm crazy for investing so much time and money into this. I don't care. Fuck her. She doesn't get it. I can tell she never loved me. If she did, she would understand what it is I'm working towards. This will be worth it. I know it will be. It has to be.

It has to be.

34

u/Suckonmyfatvagina 7d ago

Some say he is still tick snack toeing to this day

5

u/newaccount721 7d ago

I'd agree with this except his clear reversal at the end. He was either told no or that one smells bad to him and he selected the test he prefers

10

u/certifus 7d ago

Blasphemy!

4

u/beldaran1224 7d ago

Well, also the human made an obviously bad move from the start...and who starts on O anyways?

16

u/WhoaItsCody 7d ago

That’s what I’m choosing to think, because it’s fun. Some people just can’t enjoy things at face value. Analyzing a children’s game that everyone knows always ends in a tie is just sad.

22

u/MrSluagh 7d ago

I choose to think the dog has a hidden earpiece and is being fed the right moves by a squirrel in a van outside. Cheater.

9

u/WhoaItsCody 7d ago

That’s so much better. They have stakeout snacks and everything. Lol thanks for that.

4

u/newaccount721 7d ago

Doge is a cheater? Big if true

32

u/Wandanaut 7d ago

Some people just make theories about stuff because that’s also fun. No one is shitting on it, just discussing how it might’ve actually happened

10

u/WhoaItsCody 7d ago

Touché I didn’t think about that, still waking up. I’ve just known Reddit to be extremely cynical when it comes to most anything. I’m guilty of it as well, so I shouldn’t judge I guess.

9

u/Wandanaut 7d ago

I understand completely! For full transparency, I was just responding to this top two or three comments in this particular thread. You’re probably right, if I sort by controversial I’m sure there are people being downers just for the sake of it. Definitely a thing, as you mentioned

u/purplecatuniverse 7d ago

I’ve never met a dog that found any food unappealing — dipped in vinegar or sugar, covered in shit or peanut butter, real or made from plastic — they just want it in their tummies immediately.

9

u/StopsToSmellRoses 7d ago

The vinegar thing checks out. I put a few drops of ACV in my dogs’ water bowl after we went to the park and had some near misses with ticks. They basically did whatever they could to avoid drinking from the water bowl. They would jump in the bath tub and lick the water from the spout after someone took a shower or they went outside when someone was watering the flowers / garden and would lick the overflow water from the ground /cement. Eventually they would drink a tiny bit from the water bowl if they were really thirsty, but I don’t think they got used to it. I stopped adding ACV after a few weeks, because I felt bad and if felt like a waste of water.

3

u/dahbubbz 7d ago

Try Bravecto if you're worried about you dog getting bit by ticks. It kills the tick if they bite your dog same with fleas and similar pests.

4

u/fooph 7d ago

You haven't met my dog then. He is extremely picky. He will ask for what you're eating and accept or refuse it after inspection. Size is just as important as content. He is also a Shiba.

I was wondering just this, how he managed to have the dog pick the right snacks.

Also, the first X he plays is the worst possible first play in this game.

90

u/ANGLVD3TH 7d ago

Every move is the worst possible move for X aside from the middle, where you can force a tie. If player one starts in a corner, they can force a win off of any edge play from player 2, or a tie if player 2 starts in the kiddle.

2

u/Witness_me_Karsa 7d ago

I enjoyed playing it until I realized this. I figured out how easy it was to win and challenged people all the time as a kid. Easy to beat even an adult who doesn't know the strategy, and there aren't many games you can say this about, that adults are willing to play with kids.

Likely some sort of training involved, often times animals will look for facial expressions to know if they have made the right choice (see Clever Hans Effect) even without something fishy going on.

2

u/Silver_kitty 7d ago

Definitely could be!

We’re working on tricks with our dog and are building up having him pick up treats in the order they were placed. He’s currently only up to a sequence of three before he loses focus, but you could do something like that here.
